Alexandre Roubtzoff

[Russia][France] (b 1884/d 1949)

"Alexandre Roubtzoff entered Saint-Petersburg's Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in 1904 and had classes from Ivan Zionglinski and Dmitri Kardovski ... during this first period of his education, he won six prizes from the Academy, and made a painting that still is exhibited at the Hermitage Museum...(..)  In 1914 he arrived in Tunis and settled there permanently obtaining the French nationality in 1924, never returning to Russia...(..) All along his life, between 1899 and 1949, Roubtzoff kept travelling across Europe and North Africa and  spoke five languages: russian, french, arabic, spanish and italian.(...) purchases by the State and several exhibitions in Tunis and in the metropolis gave him an important place in the artistic life of the colony ; (..)  In 2010, an official tribute was paid to him in Tunisia with the exhibition "Roubtzoff and the Medina""
