John Maass

[Austria][USA] (b 1918/d 1991)

"Born in Vienna, Mr. Maass fled with his family to England to escape the Nazis, who later confiscated the family's paint factory. He came to the United States in 1941 and served in the U.S. Air Force in Italy from 1943 to 1945. After the war, Mr. Maass went to work as art director for the N.W. Ayer & Son Advertising Agency in Philadelphia. He worked in the Philadelphia City Representative's Office from 1958 until he retired in 1982. He was first an art director there and later information officer...(...) An authority and lecturer on Victorian art, Mr. Maass wrote his first book in 1957. (...) A commercial artist as well as an author, Mr. Maass submitted one of four winning designs for a stamp commemorating the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, which was issued in 1960.
