Marc Leguay

[France] (b 1910/d 2001)


Marc Leguay was separated from his parents during WWI and went to live with his Grandmother in Normandy.. He studied in Evreux and Graduated in 1927...in the following years he made several exhibitions in France and Spain , where he even met Salvador Dali... during one of his exhibitions, he was introduced to Mr. Pierre André Michel, Governor of Indochina.. he then gained a three month  stay in Indochina in December 1935..After this time period , Marc decided to stay in Oriental lands and when he was expected to return to France , he disappeared being uncovered in Laos, where the Governor himself went to see him and grant him the right to live in Laos... from that day Laos was his Country of Adoption..During the next 10 years he absorbed all the Beauty and richness of Laos Nature and Culture...He opened the Laos Art School and meets his future wife with whom he marries in 1946.. in 1947 he decide to went to the Capital,with his family  due to the proximity of the Japanese Invading forces.. He then became a Professor of Drawing , profession that he exercised until 1975.. In 1951 he starts his career as Stamp and Bank Note Designer, by which he is mostly known, after Laos had just received Postal autonomy .. 
Due to a Political Movement in Laos, all the foreigners had to abandon the country in 1975 and Marc Leguay went to Thailand , where he lived until his final days in 2001...

[ two series of stamps from 1969 and 1970 respectively , exist with paintings of Marc Leguay, but I don't considered them as stamps designed by the Artist...]
