[Germany] (b 1924/d 1996)
"In 1939 he began his training as a weaver in the 'Modehaus Horn' in Magdeburg.
During this time he completed almost five semesters of drawing lessons in the evening study at the 'Meisterschule des Deutschen Handwerks Magdeburg'(...) In 1942, Stauf was convicted, and was put to war in Africa. After being deported to the United States in 1948, he was able to return to his hometown in 1950.(...) He studied under Professors Meyer-Foreyt, Professor Kapr, Völkel, Krug and Ilgenfritz until 1956. At the "Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst" he studied a three-year-old aspirant with his mentor Heinrich Ilgenfritz.
Stauf's training had been directed at the Deutsche Wertpapierdruckerei in Leipzig as a designer and engraver of stamps. (...) While still a aspirant, he won the first prize in the category of copper engraving of the international competition on the occasion of the "VI. Congresso Europeo de ex-libris 1958 "in Barcelona. Thus he had suddenly become internationally known. His experience in designing stamps and comparing industrial printing processes with copper engraving led him to a remarkable realization that he noted in his essay "On the three-dimensional copperplate" It is possible to vary the individual lines in a stepless manner by means of deeper, and therefore wider, piercing, which leads to further, meaningful expressive possibilities. (...) No wonder, then that the carefully designed treasures are collected and appreciated in more than 30 countries. Stauf participated in many exhibitions and competitions. They took place in Spain, Austria, CSSR, Poland, the Soviet Union / CIS and the Netherlands, but mainly in the GDR and the Federal Republic. "
