Francine Somers

[Belgium] (1923)


Francine Somers was born in Ghent ..Her father was a goldsmith, jeweler, engraver and watchmaker in Dampoortstraat and her mother was very musical and studied piano and singing . She was only seven when her exceptional talent for drawing was noticed by Jules De Bruycker...with only 13 years , Francine entered the Ghent  Fine Arts Academy ..from 1936 to 1943 she studied living Model, Still Life, etching and sketching. Francine Somers graduated with two awards: the first prize of the Academy (gold medal), and the prize "Jean Delvin." During WWII she made ​​numerous sketches about the life and the misery of war in Ghent..in 1951 the family moved to the Belgium Congo to return to Brussels only in 1954...during this brief period , Francine awake for the worlds of Sculpture and Medal Design, that in the following years had great importance in her Artistic life...She also worked as an illustrator and Poster Designer...
