Marcel Rau

[Belgium] (b 1886/d 1966)


Marcel Rau comes from a family where working with stone was part of Normality..his father was an Architect and the Famous Architect Victor Horta was his Godfather...between 1903 and 1909 ,Marcel studied Architecture and Sculpture at the Brussels Fine Arts Academy.. In 1909 he won the Sculpture "Grand Prix De Rome" and immediately started to travel across Europe... After WWI , in 1920,he exhibited at the Antwerp Triennial... Marcel Rau is known for his work not only in sculpture but also as a Medal and coin Designer and his entire life and work was devoted to the revival of Belgium Decorative Arts...

[ After searching many time for an Artist called A. Rau [name of the Stamp designer in my catalogs..) , I found a site about Belgium Medals ,where the work of Marcel Rau was under focus... among the many medals he designed , one had a similar design to the one that appear in the stamp and it was also about Charleroi ... if any of the viewers know anything about an Artist called A. Rau, please comment on this post... I will immediately updated or correct the post...]
