James Alexander Johnstone

James Alexander Johnstone was born at Edinburgh in 1893...in 1914, after his basic studies, he began a 6 year course at the  Edinburgh College of Arts ...He was quickly recognized as a diligent and personable worker, and in 1926 he moved to New Zealand where a place at the Christchurch School of Arts was waiting for him..."Though James Johnstone was primarily a teacher in design and metalwork, and is best known for his contributions to the development of design in Canterbury, his artistic practice was not exclusive to these mediums. From his arrival in New Zealand in 1926, he regularly exhibited oil and watercolour paintings."
