Karel Vik

[Czechoslovakia] (b 1883/d 1964)



"Karel Vik was a Czech graphic artist , illustrator and painter . Between 1,902 - 1908 he studied landscape painting with Rudolf von Ottenfeld at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague . Following the success of the graphic exhibition in Leipzig, he began creating graphics, a large part of his work consisted of woodcuts . In Prague, he co-founded Hollar . Soon he moved to Turnova , where he participated in the founding of Turnovské work (especially in conjunction with Karl Kinsky ). Tavík František Šimon

[Czechoslovakia] (b 1877/d 1942)


" Tavík František Šimon was a painter, etcher, and woodcut artist (..) As a student at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, he received a stipend that allowed him to travel to Italy, Belgium, England and France. He had his first solo exhibition in Prague in 1905, and a Paris exhibition in 1906. His extensive travels would eventually also bring him to New York City, London, the Netherlands, Spain, Morocco, Ceylon , India, and Japan, images of all of which appear in his work. After spending 1905–1913 based in Paris, Simon returned to Prague and became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague. In 1917, he became a founding member of the Hollar Association of Czech Graphic Artists, which he later chaired. Many of his most notable images are of Prague, New York, and Paris, but also include portraiture and self-portraiture and images of the Czech and Slovak countryside. Šimon's style was strongly influenced by the French Impressionists and, perhaps through them, by Japanese printmaking techniques, in particular color aquatints with soft ground etching " [ Wikipedia ]

Erich Gruner [ 1st Part (1947/1955) ]

[Germany] (b 1881/1966)


from 1900 to 1905 Erich Gruner studied at the Leipzic Academy of Visual Arts, and then travelled to Paris where he remained one year , having lessons with Jean Paul Laurens...the period from 1909 to 1912 was for sure more relaxed , with travels to Portugal, Spain and Italy...after returning, he began to have some Artistic recognition, but this short period was interrupted by WWI, where he was wounded twice...in 1919 he made some designs , posters and the Logotype for the Leipzig Fair ... He was the Director of the Leipzig School of Applied Arts from 1930 to 1946..His Art work covers a wide range of specialties : Book covers, illustration, Posters, Postage stamps, Typography, Logotypes,  Stage and set designs, etc..

Eduard Ege

[Germany] (b 1893/d 1978)


" Eduard Ege lived since 1898 in Munich. He was a pupil of Julius Diez at the School of Applied Arts and worked as an illustrator for Georg Müller Verlag and the 'Three Masks' publisher . From 1921 to 1926 he was a teacher of Commercial Art at the Munich training Workshops ...from 1926 to1935 he was director and owner of the training Workshops. (..) He taught at the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts.  As a commercial artist , Ege designed in 1945 the Bavarian Coat of Arms and the logo used until 1993 by the German Federal Railroad . In 1957 he made ​​the design for the new Munich City Coat of Arms." ( Wikipedia )
