Paul Schuitema

[Netherlands] (b 1897/d 1973)


"Paul Schuitema was a Dutch graphic artist. He also designed furniture and expositions and worked as photographer, film director, painter and teacher of publicity design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Schuitema studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam. In the 1920s, he began to work on graphic design, (..) During his employment at the NV Maatschappij Van Berkel Patent scale company in Rotterdam, Schuitema gained recognition for his original designs of stationery and publicity material, often using only the colors black, red and white and bold sans serif fonts.  From 1926 on, he started working with photomontages, becoming one of the pioneers of this technique in the field of industrial design. (..) Following Dolle Dinsdag (September 5, 1944), he officially joined the resistance forces, assuming a leadership role in the National Film and Photo Reportage Service.. (..) After the end of the war Schuitema was one of the 4 founders of the Dutch Cooperative for Film Production in Haarlem and gave the impulse for the formation of the Dutch Film Makers Guild . "

Aarne Nopsanen

[Finland] (b 1907/d 1990)


Aarne Nopsanen was a Finnish painter, graphic artist and illustrator. Nopsanen went lower secondary school , and then studied at the Vyborg art-drawing school from 1924 to 1925 and at the Finnish Art Society Drawing School from 1928 to 1930...in the period from 1931 to 1932 he attended the Paris Academy Colarossi...He started his active professional life working in an advertising company from 1934 to 1939... he was a draftsman during the War period and immediatelly after he made a living as an Illustrator...His production consisted of advertisements as well as book covers and illustrations. In addition, he was also a painter, and painted landscapes and portraits...

Alphée Dubois

[France] (b 1831/d 1905)



Alphée Dubois was son of the Engraver Joseph Eugène Dubois.. in 1855 he won the 'Grand Prix De Rome' in the discipline of Engraving ..he spent the next 5 years studying the Models from Antiquity and perfecting himself in his Art...the execution of two medals ( Le Pape Pie IX bénissant le Prince Impérial, et La Réception des Ambassadeurs Siamois de Fontainebleau)  brought him fame and many Official orders appeared...He exhibited his work many times and won numerous medals and Honors...

Anton Stefanov Mitov

[Bulgaria] (b 1862/d 1930)


"When he was fifteen, Ottoman troops burned his hometown (..) and his family fled to Svishtov, where they lived in poverty... He took a job as a clerk in Romania and remained there until Bulgaria was liberated in 1878, returning home determined to be an artist. In 1881, after working as a telegraph operator for two years, he saved enough money to enroll at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze where he studied under the direction of Giuseppe Ciaranfi. Upon his return home, he worked as a journalist and a teacher in Stara Zagoda, Plovdiv, Varna and Sofia. ..In 1896, he was one of the co-founders of the National Academy of Arts
in Sofia, where he taught art history, drawing and perspective. He served two terms as its Director, from 1912 to 1918, and from 1924 to 1927. (..) One of the first Bulgarian painters to exhibit internationally (..), Mitov was also active in the nation's political and cultural life, making contributions to many newspapers.. (..) He also lectured extensively and did book illustrations ...

[ in my catalogs the stamps designed by Anton Mitov and G. Estavien ( in the 1911 series) are not specified, but after a closer look to several scans of the stamps,I concluded that only 4 of them were work of Anton Mitov... it is easy, after we find his signature in the stamps (G. Estavien also signed his designs...) ; we must find this signature mark in the stamps


it is very clear that there is an A over an M from Anton Mitov..]
