Oscar Bonnevalle [ 1st Part (Belgium 1963/1967) ]

[Belgium] (b 1920/d 1993)

"In his hometown Ghent , Oscar Bonnevalle had classes in the Academy of Fine Arts and the School Arts et Crafts. At the age of seventeen , he exhibited for the first time and received the first prize of painting and the gold medal of drawing ...He will then work as a decorator and used the most diverse styles. During World War II he fled to France where he works on a farm and was deeply inspired by the raw nature and life on the village of Auvergne. Homesickness brought him back to Belgium, where he made his debut as a theater decorator and costume designs for Lohengrin. (..) In 1945 Bonnevalle fulfills his military service in England where he paints canteens, watercolors and drawing caricatures which he later edited with the pseudonym Bonny.. (..) In 1962 Bonnevalle comes rather by chance in the world of philately . Someone asked him to design the stamps for the 350th anniversary of the Ghent Schermer Guild St. Michiels. The stamps known immediate success and it was the beginning of one of the most remarkable philatelic careers. For thirty years, he will design more than 155 stamps for the Belgian Post and abroad, especially Africa, (..) He gets several national and international awards. A highlight here is definitely the prize he receives in Lisbon in 1967 of the European Postal Union for its Europe-stamps.."
