Lady Carter

[USA] (b 1875/d 1953)

Lady Carter was the wife of Sir Gilbert Thomas Carter. He was a lifetime British colonial administrator in Africa and the Caribbean, who was knighted for his service to the Crown for negotiating treaties that ended a long war in Lagos.
Sir Gilbert was governor and commander-in-chief of the Bahamas in 1903 at the time of his marriage to the former Gertrude Codman Parker of Boston. He was transferred to Barbados the following year and appointed governor and commander-in-chief of Barbados. Lady Carter, an accomplished artist, began designing and building the governor's mansion, Ilaro Court, which still stands in Barbados and is now the prime minister's residence.
In 1906, Barbados issued a stamp Lady Carter designed to mark the 300th anniversary of the first British landing at Barbados aboard the 'Olive Blossom'.

Update by 'Chrissy' in 09/08/2015 02:40 (please read the comments to this post) : 'Prior to her marriage to Gilbert Thomas Carter in 1903, Gertrude Codman Parker, the daughter of stockbroker Francis Vose Parker, trained as an artist in Boston under tutors such as Philip Leslie Hale at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

She was a talented artist. After her marriage, as Lady Carter, she continued to pursue her artistic interests in Barbados when her husband was transferred there from the Bahamas and appointed as governor and commander-in-chief of Barbados. Gertrude immersed herself in creating her new home- Ilaro Court and used her considerable talent to add to the cultural life of the island.'

Barbados 1906 "Nelson Centenary Issue" (7,1) [Recess (De La Rue)] Sc(102,...,108) [In all the Catalogs I use to make this post's , the design of this stamp is credited to Mrs. G. Goodman.. well , I cannot find any reference from this Artist - and that is not strange , at all... - , but the Fact of the Former name of Lady Carter - before her marriage with Sir Gilbert Carter - was Gertrude Codman led me to conclude that the designer was Lady Carter under her former name ; I cannot explain the fact of the appearance of the name Goodman in the Catalogs.. if any of the readers  has proofs of the existence of this Artist 'Mrs. G. Goodman' , please leave a comment on this post ...] [Updated in 21/12/2014]

Mrs Codman Carter could easily have been mistaken for Goodman Carter and wrongly transcribed.
