Aurelio Mistruzzi

[Italy] (b 1880/d 1960)


"Born at Villaorba di Basiliano in 1880, Aurelio Mistruzzi studied at the Udine Art School, having classes with the Sculptor De Paoli. (..) He moved to Venice to study at the local Art Academy but after a short period of time , he traveled to Milan where he began the course of Professors Mazzucchelli and Petini at the Brera Academy ,both impressionist Sculptors. (..) in 1908 he won a Scholarship to study at the Rome Art of the Medal School..(..)  in 1914 he started the first of his great works, with the decoration of the Udine Municipal Palace and began also to build funerary Sculptures.(..) Official Medalist and Engraver of the Vatican from 1920 to 1959 he always been faithful to the Classic model of the Italian Tradition and brought to all his work a refined technical accuracy. "

Benjamin Sarraillon

[France] (b 1901/d 1989)


"Born at Lion in 1901 , Benjamin Sarraillon , after studying at the local Fine Arts School under Professor Mangier , established himself with his wife in Algeria in the year of 1924. (..) seduced by the vast horizons and the luminosity of the Capital, he opened a design atelier in Algiers...in the following year he met the famous Orientalist Painter Etienne Dinet who became interested in his work...(..) the Flemish  portrait painter and sculptor Jules Van Biesbroeck was other of his main influences , being his master for 4 consecutive years...(..) Sarraillon made his first Exhibition in 1932 at Algiers..(..) encouraged by the positive reviews of the press, he exposed annually in Algeria until 1962. (..) during the first years of his Algerian Adventure, he worked for 'L'Echo D'Algier' and 'Afrique Du Nord Illustrée' always as draftsman or illustrator...(..) mobilized to the Army in 1939,he served as Cartographer ; his work was recognized as being one of the best , so in 1943 he started to work with top secret subjects ,making plans and maps for the Allied Army..(..) in 1945 he restarted his Artistic life , returning to his graphical activities, working for journals and Magazines..."

Emvin Cremona [ 1st Part (1957/1961) ]

[Malta] (b 1919/d 1987)


"Emvin Cremona is regarded as one of the best Maltese artists of the 20th century. He is known for designing most Maltese stamps from 1957 to the 1970s. (..) He studied at the Malta School of Arts and the Regia Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome. (..) Some of his works can be found at the local parish churches, but the Chapel of the Malta International Airport , the World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva and the United Nations Headquarters in New York also house paintings by Cremona. (..) At an early age, he used to participate in the annual shows of the Malta Amateur Art Association and in 1937 he competed for the Government scholarship , but he was luckily able to summon enough financial assistance to proceed to Rome, where he stayed until 1940 (..) In 1945 he won the Agnes Schembri Bequest, enabling him to proceed to London and Paris to deepen his studies in art. Between 1945 and 1947 he attended classes at the Slade School of Fine Arts and later he attended lessons at the Parisian Ecole Superieur de Beaux Arts under professor Jean Dupas. Emvin returned to Malta in 1948. He represented the country in their first pavilion at the Venice Biennale. (..)"

Douglas Gorsline

[USA] (b 1913/d 1985)

"Douglas Gorsline attended the Rochester School of Technology, the Yale School of Art and the Art Students League of New York. (..)  He was elected into the National Academy of Design in 1943 as an Associate member, and became a full Academician in 1947. (..) He taught at the National Academy of Design in New York City before moving to France in 1964. He was the first American artist invited to China (1973) and his work was exhibited regularly in the United States and in France, Belgium and Germany. (..) 
Gorsline started out as a painter of social realism, though his more mature style was influenced by cubism, surrealism, and photographers of movement such as Étienne-Jules Marey and Edweard Muybridge. (..) He worked in many media, including lithography, painting, and etching. He was an illustrator as well as a painter, and wrote and illustrated several children's books , (..) as well as an edition of Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel, and his own novel, Farm Boy.. (..) The Gorsline Museum was created by his widow, Marie Gorsline, and inaugurated in 1994, nine years after his death, at Bussy-le-Grand, in Côte-d'Or, France. (..)"
