Robert Weimerskirch

[Luxembourg][USA]  (b 1923)



"A prominent figure in the Houston art community, Robert Weimerskirch lives and works in Wimberley, Texas.  Much of his art, both painting and sculpture, is based on his "thoughts and improvisations," and rooted in classical themes.  A native of Luxembourg, Weimerskirch received his art education from the Brussels Royale Academie des Beaux Arts and the Academia di Belli Arti Brera, Milan.  Additionally, he has taught drawing and painting at the University of Houston; The Glassell School of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Houston Art League."

Adomas Jakševičius

[Lithuania] (b 1908/d 1967)


Adomas Jakševičius was a Sculptor and Church Decorator...after graduating from the high School , he did not proceed his studies... his father Vincent Jakševičius , a renowned Sculptor , saw in him a Great Artistic Talent  and decided to personally manage his Superior Education...So Adomas take lessons of several Art disciplines, Art history, painting, Sculpture,etc.. in 1928 he designed and built the Freedom Monument  and helped his father in the following years...In the postwar years he created tombstone sculptures, religious paintings, statues of saints, decorated churches and was involved in several other Art activities...

Carl Schwatlo

[Germany] (b 1831/d 1884)


"After high school in Königsberg, Carl Schwatlo attended the Berlin Architecture Academy from 1850 to 1852 (..) in 1854 he joined the Berlin Architects and Engineers Association and initiated the following period of studies that ended with the final examination in 1857... At this time he was prepared to practice Architecture but he started by teaching as substitute professor at the BAEA ...(..) He taught in several Academies and Universities and in 1882/1883  was nominated head of the architecture department of the Technical University.. (..) He is mostly known by his work as ' Post Architect ' for the General Post Office and after German Unification in 1871 for the Reichspost...(..) from 1865 to 1876 he was head and manager of the construction of numerous Post Office's some of them of Monumental dimension...(..) In 1872 Schwatlo lost large portions of his private assets for unknown reasons and this sudden impoverishment has led to some excessive work , that is considered to be the real motive behind the fatal heart attack that caused his death in 1884..."

Jules-Jacques Puyplat

[France] (b 1843/d 1915)



"Jules Puyplat  should be seen specially as an illustrator,and worked for Magazines and Newspapers as "Le Musée Universel", "Le Magazin Pitoresque", "Le monde illustré", etc... He engraved his first postage stamps in 1904 and until 1906 he was very active in several of the French colonies, designing or/and engraving large series of stamps...his last works were made for the French Indies, to whom he dedicated his last years.." As a wood Engraver he left us a significant number of spectacular works..

[Several of these stamps were issued in more than one French colony][ I could not find sufficient data about the Dahomey's 1906/07 series.. the stamps were engraved by Jules Puyplat but the designer is still unknown.. comments are , as usual, welcome ]
