Melchiorre Melis

[Italy] (b 1889/d 1982)


Melchiorre Melis , painter, illustrator, decorator and Ceramist,was born at Bosa in 1889.. His Artistic skills soon call the attention of the local Community and a studentship allows him to study at the Rome Fine arts Academy..during this period he also learned in the Dullio Cambellotti Studio , where he took the first steps into the world of Graphic Design...in 1919 , after the military Service in Sardinia he started to work as Artistic director and designer in the Magazine 'Rivista Sarda'...This is the time of the first Exhibitions of drawings and Ceramic material...Many projects and Exhibitions later, he was called in 1934 to direct and manage new Tripoli's Arts and Crafts School and the Ceramic Art School and this was a task that keeps him busy until 1942...After returning to Rome , his idea of non collaboration with the Fascist Regime led to a self imposed ' Artistic Retirement' , and only in 1949 he started a new group of Exhibitions... in 1965 he dedicated himself only to painting ..

Arne Wallhorn

[Sweden] (b 1921/d 1994)


Best known for being one of the Sweden Engraving Masters, Arne Wallhorn worked for several countries always spreading his mastery in a discipline that rapidly is being seen as something 'from the past'...He worked for several years in the Swedish Post as an apprentice of Sven Ewert  , other Great engraver , responsible for most of the Swedish stamps from 1931 to 1959 , and in the immediate future he knew Czesław Słania , other World figure of the engraving, just starting also his Swedish Period...He studied at the Technical School (later the College of Arts) in the evenings and continued at the School of Typographical and Advertising Art .... at the age of 21 he was a student of the Graphic Design specialty in the Arts Academy...following this period of continuous learning , he started his work in the Swedish Postal Service and engraved his first stamps in 1953...

Max Buchholz

[Germany] (b 1878/d 1942)



Max Buchholz, painter, artist and engraver (born 13 February 1878 in Legnica ). He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and Wroclaw. He was a teacher of Art classes and a member of the association of amateur artists of Gdansk (Danzig). (..)  He designed vignettes to a series of telegrams and postcards with famous citizens of the city: Johannes Hevelius, Daniel Chodowieckego, Arthur Schopenhauer."  He was also a great Stamp Designer...

Janko Alexy

[Czechoslovakia] (b 1894/d 1970)


Janko Alexy was a painter and also a writer. He was awarded the title of "National Artist". After ending his education at the Lucenec High School , he spent some time working in a local pharmacy ... in 1919 he continued his studies in the Prague Visual Arts Academy and after graduation he worked as Drawing professor .. for 1927 on he devoted himself only to the Artistic Activity.. Janko  extensive work contains about 1,300 oils, pastels and drawings inspired by folk works, legends and landscapes and about 20 books , mainly dedicated to his childhood and youth personal experiences...
