Irenio Miranda

[Philippines] (b 1896/d 1964)


"Ireneo Miranda was born in San Fernando, Pampanga, the Philippines. He graduated from the U.P. School of the Arts in 1916, and then designed labels and advertisements for the Pacific Commercial Company. Miranda later became a faculty member there under Fabian de la Rosa. Known as a watercolorist, illustrator and cartoonist, he was at one time called the "Dean of Philippine Cartoonists." "

Fabian De La Rosa

[Philippines] (b 1869/d 1937)


De La Rosa started his Painting  Education with classes from his Aunt  Mariana De La Rosa , when he was still 10 years old..Agustin Saez was his teacher during the 3 years he spent studying in the School of Fine Arts and Portraits.. in 1908 he went to Paris to continue his studies in the Julian Academy..after returning to Philippines , De La Rosa was one of the first  teachers of the recent Fine Arts School of the Philippines University and from 1927 to 1937 he was it's Director ..;  during his Artistic Life he won many National and International Prizes .

Norman Rockwell

[USA] (b 1894/d 1978)


"(..) At the age of 14 , Norman Rockwell went on to the National Academy of Design and finally to the Art Students League. There, he was taught by Thomas Fogarty, George Bridgman, and Frank Vincent DuMond; his early works were produced for St. Nicholas Magazine, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) publication Boys' Life, and other youth publications . Rockwell submitted his first successful cover painting to The Saturday Evening Post Post in 1916 (..) and published 323 original covers for the Post for over 47 years. (..) He was given the role of a military artist, in the WWI ..(..) In 1943, during World War II, Rockwell painted the Four Freedoms series, which was completed in seven months and was inspired by a speech of Franklin D. Roosevelt,..(..) During his long career, he was commissioned to paint the portraits for Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon, as well as those of foreign figures, including Gamal Abdel Nasser and Jawaharlal Nehru. One of his last works was a portrait of Judy Garland in 1969. (..) His last commission for the Boy Scouts of America was a calendar illustration entitled, The Spirit of '76, which was completed when Rockwell was 82, concluding a partnership which generated an astounding 471 images for periodicals, guidebooks, calendars, and promotional materials. (..) Rockwell received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States of America's highest civilian honor, in 1977."

Nikolay Andreevich Tyrsa

[Russia] (b 1887/d 1942)


"TYRSA Nikolay Andreevich was a  graphic artist and painter. He attended the Academy of Arts (1905-09) and E.N. Zvantseva Arts School (1906-10), studying painting . (..) He was the author of lyrical water-colour landscapes of Leningrad, chamber graphic ,portraits and many book illustrations performed in drawing, water-colour and lithography, which have been described as masterly sketches.  (..) He taught at the Academy of Arts in 1918-22 and the Institute of Civil Engineering from 1924. In 1939-42 he was one of the initiators of the Fighting Pencil Association. "
