Kurt Plowitz

[Czechoslovakia][USA] (b 1912/d 1969)

"This Czech-born American artist and illustrator supposedly designed the yellow smiley face for a 1951 or '52 UNICEF fundraising campaign called "A Smile for UNICEF," but since the United Nations never copyrighted the image it was picked up in the mid-1960s and has become an icon; as a staff artist for the U.N. Graphic Presentation Unit , he was quite active between 1956 and 1964 and designed several U.N. stamps. (..)"

[ The Artist who designed this stamp appears in the catalogs as Y. Vladimirov or N. Vladimirov... I cannot find any data about any of them , but the coexistence in this same time frame of a known Artist with work related to this thematic , led me to conclude that the real Artist should be Ivan Vladimirov, know for his battle Paintings and scenes from Revolutionary movements that were in fact occurring during those days... If any of the viewers of this blog knows anything about this, please contact me going to the 'About' page... there is yet another point of discordance between SG and Russian Catalogs.. SG say that the stamp designed by Ivan Vladimirov was the 7k and the Russian version is that was the 14k... I present them both , but my final answer will be presented in a future update.. Until them , please consider this post as "Very Dubious" and use the information with Caution.. ]
