Bertram Mackennal

[Australia] (b 1863/d 1931)


"Bertram Mackennal was born in Fitzroy, Victoria, a suburb of Melbourne, the second son of parents who were both of Scottish descent. His mother was Annabella, née Hyde, and his father was John Simpson Mackennal, a sculptor. John Mackennal provided Bertram his early training which was followed by studies at the school of design at the Melbourne National Gallery which he attended from 1878 to 1882. (..) In 1910 Mackennal designed the Coronation Medal for King George V and also won the important commission for the obverse design (the monarch's head) of the new coinage needed for the new reign from 1911, from which he developed the new design for the King's head on British postage stamps. (..) Mackennal was the first Australian artist to be knighted. He was created a Knight Commander of the Victorian Order in 1921 by H.M. King George V on the occasion of the unveiling of the London equestrian statue of King Edward VII. He was elected R.A. in 1922. "

John Farleigh

[Great Britain] (b 1900/d 1965)


" Farleigh left school at 14 and enlisted as an apprentice at the Artists' Illustrators Agency in London, applying himself to lettering, wax engravings and black and white drawings, intended for advertising. He also attended drawing classes at the Bolt Court School. In 1918 he was drafted into the army and served until peace was declared in November of the same year. He resumed his apprenticeship and was awarded a government grant enabling him to enrol for three years at the London County Council Central School of Arts and Crafts (later the Central School of Art and Design). (..) Between 1922 and 1925 Farleigh was an art teacher at Rugby School, thereafter returning to London and assuming a post at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where he taught antique and still-life drawing and later, illustration. (..) Farleigh was a founder member and chairman of the Crafts Centre of Great Britain. In 1941 the British Council commissioned him to design the title page of the catalogue for the Exhibition of Modern British Crafts. (..) He was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1937 and a full member in 1948."

Louis Jules Dumoulin

[France] (b 1860/d 1924)


"Student of Henry Gervex, Dumoulin  was in 1890 one of the creators of  the Fine Arts National Society..he regularly exhibited in Paris and in 1887 received an Honorable Mention of the 'Salon Des Artistes Français'.. His travels through numerous Countries brought him much of the inspiration for his paintings. (..)
In 1887 he was asked by the Fine Arts Director Jules-Antoine Castagnary to travel to Japan.. An exhibit was organized after his return, with brilliant studies not only about Japan , but also about China, and other SE Asia countries..Dumoulin travels constantly to Brazil, Senegal, Russia, Turkey, Greece, Syria and Tunisia .. He is nominated Painter of the Navy Ministry  and of the Colonies Ministry in 1891. He was in charge of the 1906 Marseilles Colonial Exhibition and in 1908 he creates the Colonial Society of French Artists...(..) Several of his works are kept in Paris , in the Guimet Museum and at the National Museum of Africans and Oceania Arts.. "(Lynne Thornton,  'Les Africanistes.
