Julio Gil

[Portugal] (b 1924/d 2004)



Was a illustrator, Cartoonist, Caricaturist, Architect, Painter and Writer..Started his career as a Cartoonist in the so called 'Portuguese Youth Movement (Mocidade Portuguesa) ' Style while illustrating the Official Publications of the Organization.. More freedom was on his way , when he started working in the Magazine "Camarada" , writing and illustrating the Adventures of 'Chico' , a young 'boxeur' , later published in independent volumes...
His distinct drawing was left in numerous magazines and publications...

With a multidisciplinary Work, he distinguished himself not only in Architecture and Cinema , but also in Writing, Poetry, Drawing, Music and Comics..
With Carlos Ramos, Cristino da Silva, Jorge Segurado, Pardal Monteiro e Cassiano Branco, belonged to a Generation of Pioneers of Modernism in Portuguese Architecture... Trusted man of Duarte Pacheco (Minister of Public Works), Cottinelli Telmo was latter responsible for key works of the 'Estado Novo' Regime.. The Global Conception and Project of the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition and the expansion of the Coimbra University were two of his major achievements..

Was a Portuguese Architect... his work is associated with the Official Style of the Regime ('Estado Novo')(style usually called 'Portugês Suave').. worked in the project of the Ethnographic Pavilion of the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition.. His Projects are numerous through out the Country..Awarded with two Valmor Prizes (1942 and 1945..)..
