Otto Zeiller [ Austria Stamps (1964/1968) ]

[Austria] (b 1913 / d 1988)

SelfPortrait
"Otto Zeiller was born on April 19, 1913 in Vienna as the youngest of seven children. (..) At an early age, he received his first drawing lessons from his eldest brother Leopold ; due to  economic reasons, there was initially no way to study at the Academy of Fine Arts , but Otto  worked from 1931 to 1938 as a press Photographer after a three-year photography apprenticeship with Conrad Swatosch . (..) in 1939 he joined the Army , but after suffering from tuberculosis at the end of 1941 , he used his one-year stay in the military hospitals in Krumlov and Budweis for a variety of portrait studies and etchings. Exempted from military service, Otto Zeiller was able to begin his six-year study at the Kunstakademie in Vienna after completing a one-week entrance examination in the autumn of 1942 and the master classes of professors Carl Fahringer and  Heinrich Dimmel . (..) Recommended by the rector of the Academy of Fine Arts, Herbert Boeckl , Otto Zeiller carried out commissioned work until 1955 for the Russian, as well as the American military command. In this context, among others, frescoes in the Vienna Hotel Regina and an oil painting of the construction of the  monument in honor of the fallen soldiers of the Red Army . (..) From 1962 to 1988, in the late period of his work, over 200 stamps for the Republic of Austria, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Vatican were created according to designs and motifs by Otto Zeiller. (..) The artistic skills of Otto Zeiller in Austria at that time led to his special teaching activity in later years. On behalf of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, he gave lessons for two of his staff once a week for two years starting in 1982, each with a full afternoon of drawing lessons, which focused on nature studies.
